By DURIE RAINER FONG durie@thestar.com.my KOTA KINABALU: A 20-year-old woman was jailed 18 months for smothering her newborn baby boy and dumping his body into a garbage bin in Sabah’s interior district of Keningau. High Court deputy registrar Zaini Fishir, who sat as a magistrate, passed sentence after Mayfrene Medeh pleaded guilty to committing the crime on May 4 this year. The shop assistant put her hands over the baby’s mouth and nose after giving birth to him in the toilet of the shop as she was worried that other shop workers might hear the infant’s cries. Prosecuting officer Chief Insp Ramona Albert told the court on Tuesday that the woman obtained a plastic bag from her sister and placed the baby’s remains inside before cleaning the bloodstains on the floor. Ramona added the accused was seven months’ pregnant but her family and employer were not aware of this. In mitigation, Mayfrene told the court she regretted her action and promised never to repeat the offence. Ramona asked for a deterrent sentence as a lesson to others, pointing out that baby dumping among youth was on the rise. Mayfrene was charged under Section 318 of the Penal Code for concealment of birth by secret disposal of a dead body. It provides for a maximum two years’ jail term or a fine, or both, upon conviction. ——————————————————————————– © 1995-2011 Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd (Co No 10894-D)
