Should a husband provide a maid for his wife?

By Mohd Nidzam Abdul Kadir translated by Yasmin Norhazleena Bahari Md Noor

According to Imam Nawawi (of the Syafii sect) in the Minhaj-et-Talibin, a husband (solvent or insolvent) must provide his wife with “necessary” servants, if the wife is of a social position which does not permit her to dispense with the services of servant/servants.  If the wife is used to having a servant, it becomes the duty of the husband to hire a servant for his wife regardless of the husband’s social and financial position. According to the Fathul Muin, providing one’s wife with a servant is an act of treating her with kindness.
