According to Imam Malik, Imam Abu Hanifah and Imam Syafii, it is not incumbent on a wife to provide domestic services to her husband as the contract of marriage brings forth the right for enjoyment and not enslavement.[1] This means that a wife does not have the duty to do the household chores in her matrimonial home.

However, it has been reported that Fatimah (May Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of Rasullullah (pbuh) and Asma (May Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of Abu Bakar, had rendered domestic services to their respective husbands. Fatimah’s hands became swollen doing household chores whilst Asma’ fed the horses, grounded grain into flour, carried water on her head as far as about 5.3 km everyday, all on her own without aid.[2]
