Fundamental reasons of getting married

There are a few fundamental reasons of getting married:

  1. To have children. It was narrated by Ahmad that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

Marry women who bear many children who are loving. Verily, I am proud to see my many followers in the Hereafter later.

2. Prevent oneself from committing fornication. Fornication is a major sin.  ‘Abdullah narrated that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“O young people! Whoever among you can marry, should marry, because it helps him lower his gaze and guard his modesty (i.e. his private parts from committing illegal sexual intercourse etc.), and whoever is not able to marry, should fast, as fasting diminishes his sexual power.” . [1]

3. Getting married is part of human nature.

Allah Subhanahu wata’ala said in his Holy Book:

And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts): verily in that are Signs for those who reflect.[2]

Allah Subhanahu wata’ala further said:

And Allah has made for you mates (and companions) of your own nature, and made for you, out of them, sons and daughters and grandchildren, and provided for you sustenance of the best: will they then believe in vain things, and be ungrateful for Allah’s favours?[3]
